Guess Who’s Coming to Breakfast?

Journal Entry No. 12

A composition for the table: locally sourced Kate Metten ceramics, Umbrian linens, Tuscan olive-wood serving board, vintage plate and vases and flowers from the garden.

I adore setting the table. Each plate, napkin, glass and fork is like paint on a canvas, creating a composition unique to my personal taste and what it is that I wish my guests to experience. We start eating with our eyes, the enjoyment of the meal begins with the expectation set by a well-laid table. Having pieces at your table that tell a story is like having extra guests, each with anecdotes to share, an extension of your community.

Walking along Main Street a few weeks ago I was stopped in my tracks as my eye caught the lovely shades of Kate Metten’s ceramics lined up on shelves in her studio showroom. I was immediately attracted to her use of colours, and, upon walking in and holding one of her plates in my hands I could tell they were extremely well made. As someone who shops for a living, it was easy for me to pair her rose-toned and earthy white with some table linens I picked up in Umbria last fall and a vintage plate I couldn’t resist in a thrift store earlier this year. The composition made itself in my mind’s eye. Add to this that Kate is an affable and generous human who’s enthusiasm for ceramics is evident in every piece she makes. Eating off of one of her pieces means striking a friendship with this maker.

Joyful colours, a palette of pinks, blues and soft greens entices one to the table and prepares everyone for a delicious meal. I imagined a soft-poached egg with toast to start followed by a hearty bowl of Greek yoghurt with fresh fruit, nuts and honey. Or, for a decadent Sunday brunch: a couple slices of French toast topped with strawberry compote, endless cups of tea and cold orange juice shared with friends and family.

Linen place mat and napkin sourced in Umbria last fall.

Kate Metten’s pieces: large plate, egg cup, teacup, saucer, creamer and tea pot. The tea pot is a joy to hold.

A table setting inspired by spring and those breakfasts with friends and family that could go on all day.
